Defining the Model - Using Symmetry
Wherever possible, a typical area is selected and the analysis is optimised by treating only one half, separated by an axis of symmetry. This allows the analysis to run faster, as less computational memory is required, and more complexity to be built in to the model than would be possible if using the full frame. However, in more extensive buildings it may not be feasible to model even half of the building. In such cases, appropriate areas can often be identified as being representative 'worst cases' and suitable boundary conditions applied at the edges.
